" TO HAVE OR TO HAVE NOT"

The play is inspired by the novel The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain, set in the 16th century. It is the story of a very poor boy whose dream of becoming a prince comes true when he exchanges places with the son of King Henry VIII. In our story, the two protagonists are young women – a homeless woman and a film star - and we move the scene to the 21st century.

THE STORY

The story starts with a TV interview in which the film director, Steven Wheelberg tells us how he discovered Sindi when she was living homeless on the streets of London and how he made her into a famous actress.

Wheelberg explains he is making documentary film about Sindi's life, which tells us this...

Sindi is trying to sell her paintings on the street when a helicopter lands.

Pihanna has arrived to open a fashion store and meets Mr. Singleton, the store manager. Afterwards Sindi helps Pihanna to escape from a paparazzi. Then we see Pihanna with Dorothy Barker who tells the actress that Steven Wheelberg wants her to star in his film “To Have & Have Not”.

The film is about a poor, homeless woman who becomes rich and famous. Pihanna is very happy and begins to prepare for the movie. She visits Sindi to study life on the street and Sindi gives her old clothes to wear. Now Pihanna looks exactly like Sindi: poor and homeless. The next day a thief steals Mr. Singleton’s I-Pad. The store manager accuses Pihanna (he doesn’t recognise her) and gets a policeman to arrest her. At the same time, Sindi puts on Pihanna’s designer clothes. Mr. Singleton sees her and, thinking Sindi is the famous actress, he invites "Pihanna" to lunch. Meanwhile, Steven Wheelberg arranges a meeting with Dorothy and Pihanna, but Pihanna doesn’t appear because she is still in the police station. Wheelberg gets angry and wants a different actress. He sees Sindi in the street and thinks: “Why don’t I use a real, homeless person for my film?” And that person is Sindi.

At last, Pihanna leaves the police station. Still dressed in old clothes, she finds

Wheelberg and discovers Sindi has replaced her in the film. Angry, Pihanna runs away, but is followed by a paparazzi who publishes terrible photographs of her. Now the world thinks Pihanna is crazy and is finished as an actress. Dorothy decides to forget Pihanna and only work with Sindi. Sindi is now a famous celebrity. But she hates being famous and is angry about the lies that the the press is telling about her. At the end of our play, we have a homeless woman who becomes rich and famous, but who hates show business. We also have a rich celebrity who loves being famous but who becomes poor and forgotten. What will happen? Will Sindi stay famous and unhappy? Will Pihanna stay forgotten and poor?
